The Squire Farm is an idyllic smallholding in the secluded, peaceful surroundings of Red lake Valley in the southwest comer of Shropshire.
The farm consists of the farmhouse, barns and two cottages surrounded by twenty-five acres of woodland and pasture grazed by sheep and horses. There are also chickens, dogs and cats and two guinea fowl who come and go. A stream below the buildings meanders through some ancient woodland and the River Redlake runs along the northem boundary. The approach is by a private farm track, which ensures complete peace, privacy and safety.
The farm is about half a mile from Chapel Lawn where there is a village hall and a church. Bucknell (3 miles) and Clun (5 miles) have shops, post offices, a choice of pubs and Bucknell has a railway station. The nearest town of Knighton (6 miles), is an appealing Welsh market town and can supply most of one’s needs and the very attractive town of Ludlow is about 15 miles east where you will find some highly acclaimed restaurants. For walkers, riders and cyclists, there are plenty of footpaths and bridleways including Offa’s Dyke and a mountain biking trail within 3 miles and for those interested in archaeology, The Squire Farm sits at the bottom of Caer Caradoc, an ancient hill fort. It is impracticable to mention all the possibilities for entertainment here, but if you are looking for an active night-life of clubs, cinemas and theatres, Hereford or Shrewsbury are only 30 miles away.
Xidong Cottage
Xidong Cottage is a Japanese haven with a Chinese name meaning ‘Rising Sun’; an oriental retreat in the heart of Shropshire. It is the perfect setting for two for a romantic weekend. Converted from an old cowshed, it has a private and secluded garden, terraced with local stone and featuring an ornamental fish pond and a luxurious hot tub, which can be used at any time of year. A lean-to entrance way with cloakroom and wash room containing washing machine, tumble dryer and small freezer, leads into the large main room open to the eaves. Decorated in Japanese style it has the feeling of space and luxury where you can relax, eat, listen to music or watch television. Large concertina doors open out onto a small wooden deck and the garden. A stone stairwell leads up from the living room to a small mezzanine bedroom with a low sloping ceiling. The modern well-equipped kitchen is separated from a slightly quirky ‘wet’ room by an extraordinary and unique curvy green glass wall.
Two large electric radiators warm the whole cottage; all bed linen and towels are included in the price. Couples with very young babies are welcome, but the cottage is not suitable for toddlers or older children or for wheelchair users.
Squire Cottage
Squire Cottage is an old farmhouse built from local stone, timber and plaster. It sits at the top of a meadow looking down towards the River Redlake, the babbling brook and the ancient wet woodland. The cottage sleeps four people comfortably in two bedrooms. The front door opens into one large room with an inglenook fireplace complete with bread oven dominating the ‘living’ end. Here you can sit in comfortable old sofas and chairs in front of a large open fire telling stories, reading, listening to music, playing games or watching television. At the other end, there is a fully equipped kitchen with hand-built oak units and a large refectory table. There is also a small cloakroom with lavatory, washbasin and washer/dryer. Wooden stairs lead to a spacious landing; a twin bedded room, a bathroom and a double room with a magnificent chimney breast. The cottage keeps its ancient authenticity and rural feel by retaining the old beams complete with redundant peg holes through which the children can spy on their parents! There is central heating and hot water provided by an oil-fired boiler. Bed linen and towels are included in the price as are logs for the fire and electricity. A cot is available and children and well-behaved pets are welcome.
