Arts, crafts & learning in the Shropshire Hills in Westhope

At Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, they still cultivate the land the way it was done in Victorian times. The farm so reflects old traditions that it was the natural choice as the setting for TV’s Victorian Farm and Escape in Time series.

It is also a great place to come to try your hand at a wide range of country crafts, many of which are actively kept alive here ins the Shropshire Hills.

Besides traditional activities rooted in the area’s traditions, there are a great many other opportunities to sample a wide range of different experiences at different locations across the area – drawing inspiration from the landscape that has inspired painters, writers and others down the years, or trying your hand at everything from pottery to cookery. There are great opportunities to learn with like-minded people in some great locations, including Westhope College – set in its own gardens, near Craven Arms – or textile artist Bobby Britnell’s studio, in a beautifully restored historic farmhouse, near Newcastle on Clun.

Whether you want to learn how to work wood in the traditional way, lay a hedge, build a dry stone wall, write like Rankin, or paint like Picasso – the Shropshire Hills will have the course for you!
