Ancient sites of the Shropshire Hills
The Shropshire Hills are remarkably rich in remains from Neolithic times and the more recent Bronze and Iron Ages.
Neolithic sites include stone circles and single standing stones, of which the best example is the stone circle at Mitchell’s Fold, near Stapeley, which stands on a plateau with expansive views over surrounding summits.
The Iron Age has left a more extensive legacy – indeed, in parts of the area, it’s almost harder to find a summit without a hill fort than with one! Some of the best examples include Bury Ditches, near Clun; Caer Caradoc, near Church Stretton; Beacon Hill, Pontesbury; and Titterstone Clee, near Ludlow.
Offa’s Dyke is a more recent fortification, built in the eighth century by the Anglo-Saxon King of Mercia to mark the border with Powys.
